Can I get in trouble for using the copyright symbol?

Can I get sued or get in legal trouble if I use the copyright symbol on something I made? I made a banner and I didn't want anyone to steal it so I put at the bottom "© lsy". My friend said I can get sued for using that symbol. Do I have to pass through any legal process to use it or something?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

yup the police are on their way already.

Answer 2

No. You can use it as long as you're not attempting fraud (which in this case, you're not).

Answer 3

Anyone can claim copyright on any work of intellect or art. There is no need to do anything else but to place the symbol and the words Copyright 2010 (your name) Not only don't you get in trouble, it's the proper way to do it.

Answer 4

It is no longer illegal to use the copyright symbol on your own documents. Your original work is your intellectual property. If you are afraid someone will steal your document idea and you want to have proof for court later, then do the following. To actually copyright your own material, mail a copy of your document/banner/paper/etc. to yourself. When you get it in the mail, do not open it! Your sealed envelope containing your original work, will serve as proof that your document was created no later than the date on the postmarked envelope. Good luck.
