Can a book copyright notice prohibit the buyer of the book from lending the physical book to another person?

In the case of a copyrighted book being offered for sale, can the copyright holder prohibit the purchase of the book by a library? If so, could the copyright holder prohibit another purchaser of the book from donating the book to a library? Can the copyright holder prohibit the following acts by a purchaser of the book: -- lending the physical book to someone else to read -- permitting other people to examine and read the physical book

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

No to both questions. I would think that a copyright holder would want a book to be disseminated by a library, that way more people would read it.

Answer 2

Copyright means that you can not copy or reproduce the book without permission from the author.

Answer 3

In general, the copyright holder cannot legally prevent the purchaser of her/his book from either lending or permitting others to read the book. One of the purposes of copyright law is to protect the copyright holder against anyone who might attempt to unlawfully profit from her/his intellectual property. The copyright holder has the exclusive right to profit from the sale of the book—and certain related rights. The copyright holder is legally protected against a person who—without his/her express consent—copies the book (in whole or part). Note that this protection does not apply to certain situations permitted under the the Fair Use Doctrine. __________________

Answer 4
