Generally speaking, acronyms (or any short phrases, for that matter) are not subject to copyright protection. For more information, consult the copyright circular below. http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ34.html If the acronym and definition is used as a trademark, then it may be subject to trademark protection. However, in order to register your trademark, you must first use your acronym and definition in commerce as a source of goods or services. I strongly suggest you seek the advice of a good trademark attorney before proceeding. Trademark prosecution is fraught with pitfalls, and given your inexperience, you stand to lose any rights to your trademark if you do not proceed correctly.

From the instructions on form VA (for copyrighting Visual Arts works): "Labels and Advertisements: Works prepared for use in connection with the sale or advertisement of goods and services are registrable if they contain “original work of authorship.” Use Form VA if the copyrightable material in the work you are registering is mainly pictorial or graphic; use Form TX if it consists mainly of text. Note: Words and short phrases such as names, titles, and slogans cannot be protected by copyright, and the same is true of standard symbols, emblems, and other commonly used graphic designs that are in the public domain. When used commercially, material of that sort can sometimes be protected under state laws of unfair competition or under the federal trademark laws. For information about trademark registration, write to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, PO Box 1450, Alexandria, VA 22313-1450." So your new "meaning of the word" is not copyrightable. However, the image of it on a T-Shirt is copyrightable (in which case you should use form TX.) Form PA is for works in the Performing Arts, like films or music compositions. It wouldn't apply to what you are trying to do.
