How do I copyright a song that I wrote, for free?

I just wrote a song, and I want to copyright it. Is it possible to do it for free? How? And how can I publish it someplace so that the copyright is noticed?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

Do the "poor man's copyright." Send the song to yourself in the mail, but then don't open it. It's postmarked and there's your proof. The poor man's copyright has been around for ages. If you're low on funds, it's the absolute way to go. It's not perfect, but it's better than no protection at all.

Answer 2

No. You have to pay for copyright protection. Go to libraryofcongress.gov and all the details are there.

Answer 3

http://www.copyright.gov/ has all the goddamn info you need.

Answer 4

anything a person wrights is basically already copyrighted, its just the matter of having proof that's you came up with it first When is my work protected? Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. Do I have to register with your office to be protected? No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

Answer 5

darn it this other guy said what i was going to say about a poor mans proof of copyright. mail a copy to your self and don't open it untill you can afford legal measures. ps i'd like to hear it.

Answer 6

poor man's copyright is a MYTH. It is NOT a cheap means of registering a copyright and it does NOT give you any legal proof of being the creator of anything. http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkmQox3FJ.vUA1uxXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzbjJzamY0BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0gyMjdfMTMz/SIG=121q07qd9/EXP=1232279720/**http%3a//www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html
