How do anarchists feel about copyrights, intellectual property, and pirating?

What measures, if any, do they think should be taken to protect intellectual property, etc.? If these measures differ based on branch of anarchism, explain how and where. Sources would be nice.

Answer 1

I think that anarchism accepts that all people should have equal access to things and should not be restricted by things like copyright. Copyright exists to provide the creator with money, it exists to support capitalism, anarchists oppose capitalism (with the below exception) so by the transitive property they oppose intellectual property, after all can anyone really own an idea? The only branch which I think might disagree with the above concept is anarcho capitalism, I am not an expert on ancap so I'm not going to try to go into the specifics of it, I know enough about ancap to say that it's not really anarchism (it's capitalism, just because you put anarcho in front of a word does not make it anarchism). As for sources, I cannot think of anything right off hand that talks directly about anarchism and intellectual property, you could try looking in the Anarchist FAQ, I think there might something in there that could help.

Answer 2

get some books on anarchism and see if they're copyrighted...i'll bet they are...
