Any image you create is automatically protected by copyright. You could add some text to the image or close to the image also, but this is not necessary... it could make a potential copyright infringer think twice. Normally you would just put "Copyright 2009 Your Name".

Copyright of creative works is from the moment that you have created the work. The most important thing you should do if it is really important is to keep copies of all the images or stages of images e.g if you're designing something in photoshop keep a copy of each significant change so that you could clearly prove to a court that you were the creator. There are copyright services out there just search for "copyright services" but I believe that as long as you have all your original images you should be safe. Copyright text is purely a disclaimer to let others know that they have no rights with out prior written permission to copy or reuse your work ( unless use is within fair use acts and they can prove it).
