How does WalMart figure out if a picture is copyrighted or not?

If you download a picture of a zebra print off of Google, can i still print these out at WalMart? If not, how would they be able to figure out if it was copyrighted or not?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

The practical answer is that if it looks like you took it, then they probably will not challenge it. If it looks like published art, then they are more likely to. If it is well known, then ....

Answer 2

Look at it this way: If you bring them something that you cannot prove you authored (i.e., you're the photographer and were not employed by someone else to take the picture), why should they risk a federal felony to make your illegal copies? You can swear that it's yours or that you have a license, but it would be better if you actually had a copy of the license (e.g., from a wedding photographer) along with the phone number of the photographer so they can check that YOUR particular copy has been authorized. In short, they must assume that EVERYTHING is copyrighted, and that you are NOT the copyright owner, unless you can prove otherwise (in a court of law, if necessary). Otherwise THEY could go to jail.

Answer 3

They don't always know, for a fact. But considering they don't want to get sued, they may err on the side of caution to protect themselves. So, if you ended up taking the most excellet, beautiful ever photographed and the Walmart tech doesn't want to enlarge it for you, you can't force them to do it.
