All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

Put a copyright symbol followed by your name or company. There is no official way to do it, as long as you tag it as your own.

Answer 2

Actually, there is an official way of copyrighting intellectual works and there are many services out there that will take care of it for you. www.legalzoom.com charges about $150 to take care of it for you. You provide no more than 50 pages of the source code - either the first and last 25 or all pages. This applies to applications, websites, etc.

Answer 3

Yes it is free.... Copyright is the automatic international right of the author. This means you have copyright already (all for free as it's your right). As per the first answer, it is always a good idea to include a copyright notice on your work. In the case of websites, just include 'copyright © 2007 [Your Name Goes Here]. All rights reserved' in the footer of every page. It is true that there are places that you can register your work. This can be a good idea as it creates evidence of the website in your name and this can be important if you ever need to prove the site is yours (i.e. when a competitor steals your content). Registration is also required for US citizens before they can file a law suit in the US. If you are a US citizen, you can register with the US Copyright Office (http://www.copyright.gov/) - this cost around $45. If you are not a US citizen, there are a number of other facilities around the world, though you should check exactly what they provide. I use Copyright Witness/UKCS (http://www.copyrightwitness.com - UK based, registration costs from £35) as I think this is the most comprehensive service I have seen .
