Is it possible to buy items that are public domain & legally copyright them to become the owner?

I have been searching the web for items that are now public domain. Is there any way to aquire these items & file a new copyright under my name?

Answer 1

You can only copyright if you are the creator or somehow involved in the creation process. Otherwise, someone would have re-copyrighted all of the old public domain works that are available for free today.

No, once the copyright has expired, it has expired - that's the point of having a time limit on copyrights. You don't need to register a copyright in the same way as you would a patent, as it is deemed to exist from the moment of conception. In the case of public domain, the time limit started at the time of conception and ran out at the appropriate time 50 years later (there are different time limits for different types of copyright). Can you imagine if people were able to re-copyright great works of music...? it would be mayhem...
