What is entailed in selling the copyright to my photos? How much should I sell them for?

I've had an offer on the copyright to some of my photos (mostly sunrise and sunset pics here: http://www.myspace.com/celticpics under pics). However, I'm not sure if I retain *any* rights to my photos if I do and I'm really not sure how much to ask. They're not super-high resolution photos, but I believe they can be enlarged with little loss to quality, regardless. Does anyone have any input? Thanks!

Answer 1

You should really get in contact with a lawyer who specializes in copyright law. He/She will be able to help you not only understand but also get the best deal. Congratulations on selling your work!

Answer 2

Typically a photographer will lease the certain rights to an image as opposed to selling the copyright. Selling is the last thing you should consider. Price should be based on usage... what are they wanting the pics for?... post cards, greeting cards, calendars, posters... The more limited the usage the lower you can charge. Try starting at leasing with unlimited usage for $100 each and you retain the copyright to lease to others or use for yourself. If you sell the copyright, you don't even have the right to reproduce it... not even in your portfolio. Also, as part of the agreement have a byline with your name as photographer. Some people trade the rights just for the byline if it really a small or one time use project. Good Luck. beaux
