What is the procedure to get a copyright on the software that I have made?

Can a software be copyrighted on a individual's name, without the requirement him owning a company? Send me some good links if you know. Thanks.

Answer 1

Under UK law, you don't need to do *anything* to 'get a copyright'. It happens automatically; you have the copyright in something you make just by dint of making it. It certainly makes no difference if you're an individual or a company, too. From the UK government intellectual property website: "Copyright, design right and performers rights are three important unregistered IP rights that you might have. The protection is automatic - there are no fees to pay or forms to fill in. If you have something that is capable of protection in these areas, you may have it even if you do not know it. Even if protection exists, it is sensible to take precautions which are explained more fully under the relevant subject area of IP." http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk/faq/question2.htm You don't need to go through an agent to register copyright; nor does your work need a copyright symbol on it. However, it does help to mark it (c) Your name, Year. Some people also reccomend storing the original somewhere (eg, posting yourself a copy and keeping the envelope sealed) so you have proof of ownership in the event of legal procedings.

Answer 2

A copyright is assumed when an image or document is created, but you can communicate that clearly (and maximize your lawsuit against violators) if you mark the code and packaging with the circled-c copyright symbol, with date and name. Copyrighting as an individual is fine. You may actually want to patent parts of your software, but that's much more complicated and you didn't ask about that.
