Would getting CD's from the library and copying them to your computer be in violation of the copyright act?
|
I was just wondering if you got a CD or a movie from the library and had it go to your media center if that would be in violation of any piracy or copyright laws.
All Answers To QuestionsAnswer 1
Yes. When you purchase a CD, you are purchasing a limited license for personal use. It is therefore ok for you to copy that CD to your computer for a back up or for use as an mp3. When you "rent" or "borrow" a CD, you don't have that same license. Answer 2
I am not a lawyer, but I don't think there is a problem with it everyone does it Answer 3
It's still stealing. When you return the CD you return your right to hear the CD. Oddly, copying the CD, storing it on your computer then returning it has harsher legal consequences than actually stealing the physical CD from a library. IF you get caught. Answer 4
Yes, just as if you had photocopied every page of a book and added it to your personal library.
Enforcement is another question (Will you get caught? Probably not.), and ethics still another (Is it a common practice? Probably. Should you feel guilty? I don't know, maybe.) But it is certainly a violation of the law. << GO BACK to questions
