All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

If you're using it Commercially(Profiting from it both directly or indirectly), then no, you can't. If you're using it for non commercial reasons, then it's *Fair Use*, which is legal. Edit: You want to use a logo from another company/person on a paper you're selling? If that's the case, then, it's not legal.

Answer 2

Do you mean is your logo copyrighted if you haven't filed it with the copyright office? Yes. Once you create a work, you own the copyright to it (just as I own the copyright to this answer that I am typing out). If you mean can you use someone else's logo, the answer is no, even if they have not filed it with the copyright office. As soon as they create it, they own the copyright, and you cannot use it without their permission. There is an exception for "fair use", even in commercial applications. That is a little complicated to get into, but it is typically only allowed for academic purposes. That's why you can see some copyrighted images on Wikipedia. I wouldn't use it unless you look up fair use to see if the purpose that you are using it for falls under that category; even then, fair use is a grey area, and if it is challenged, you might end up in court, leaving them to decide.

Answer 3

Are you asking about the © symbol or a logo which has been copyrighted? You may use the © symbol on any applicable work which you have created whether you have registered it or not. A logo, on the other hand, cannot be copyrighted, it is trademarked (™). If it is your trademark, you can use it, followed with ™. If you have registered the trademark you can follow it with the ® sign.

Answer 4

If you created the logo yourself, you're free to use it any way you want. It's protected by copyright as soon as you create it; you don't have to register it. If you register your copyright, you have more legal options available to you if you need to sue someone for infringement. But you're protected even without registration. If you did not create the logo yourself, you need to get permission to use it from whoever created it. If you are asking if you can use the © bug to indicate that your work is copyrighted, the answer is yes. You don't need to register the copyright in order to use this symbol.
