If a specific website says Copyright: 1997-2008 does that mean you can use stuff from the website because its copyright isnt for 2009 im just confused cause games on xbox are like that

No matter what game companies do to protect their games from piracy, it never seems to work. Spore was given more copyright protection than I think I ever heard of for a game. (thinks the 3 install limit), yet it was cracked almost as soon as it was released. Meanwhile, the paying customer gets inconvenienced and treated like a criminal. So my question is, if copyright protection measures don't work, why are the game companies still implementing them? The pirates will still find a way around them and frustrated gamers may not even buy the product.

The point with copyright protection is as far as I understand to give the inventors incentives to invent. But why are not trademarks covered by normal laws for for copyright protection? As far as I understand trademarks lasts forever. I cannot see why there should be a separate law for trademarks. What is the argument for trademarks? Is it just the fact that some firms are powerful enough to "buy" enough politicians to get the law through Congress??
