Is there a way to get software that you create yourself copyrighted without paying money, if you distribute your software for free? I want to give out free copies of software I make, but I don't want people to copyright it and sell it.

I and my friends have created a computer game. We define ourselves as a team called ELEMENT. Can we claim a copyright for our game - as in, can we say "copyright ELEMENT" on our title screen, documents web page etc. Do we need to register or anything cause we are seriously out of cash? A client wants us to develop an app and wants the source code so that they can change them later on. But I want to maintain the copyright of the source code so that I can still sell the software to other clients. So can I give me the source code while I maintain the copyright?

I have come across 2 online games, both are free with options to pay for upgrades. They have maybe 20 percent difference between the two of them - menus, terms, even graphics and design are extremely similar. There is such a similarity between the two that I feel obligated to report this to someone. It's not obvious whose design came first, and so I'd rather not alert the companies themselves. What objective organization could I contact that would deal with copyright law for software? I believe both companies are based in the US, as am I. In response to the first answer - I am not talking about borrowing broad concepts. I mean that the software is identical in material, except for a very few additional features on each site. Absolutely identical, there can be no mistaking it. It would be similar to taking a thesis and tacking on one chapter, not like writing a paper on the same subject.

I can understand a Copyright license for source code that is published (e.g. the GPL) because its easy to see exactly what's being protected against copying, not to mention it protects against against a very specific threat -- using the source code to compile your own unauthorized software. On the other hand, companies that don't open their source code should theoretically only be able to enforce copyright laws against someone who's accessed & stolen source code and used it to compile unauthorized software. I don't understand how it can be used to combat piracy when then source code was never involved in the act.
